International
conference on ''The Global Economy in a Time of Uncertainty:
Capitalist trajectories and progressive alternatives'',
organised by International Development Economics Associates
(IDEAs), Muttukadu, Chennai, India, 24-26 January,
2012. |

International Development Economics
Associates will mark a decade of existence in 2011.
This has been a period of rapid change in the global
economy. The need for analytically sound and empirically
grounded but creative heterodox economic thinking
that IDEAs was set up to encourage and propagate
has become steadily more apparent with the multiple
crises in global and national economies. This is
also a time when people across the world are searching
with greater urgency for progressive economic alternatives
to the current paradigms.
To celebrate the survival and expansion of IDEAs,
and to look to the future, IDEAs will organise a
conference over 24-26 January, 2012 in Muttukadu,
Chennai, India.
The proposed conference intends to examine a range
of issues, including the following:
-
Is a sustained recovery
possible within the current global economic
architecture?
-
Is the financial genie out
of the box? Or is a capitalist trajectory in
which finance capital is regulated and reined
in still a possibility?
-
What are the forms and implications
of the changing organisation of global production
(in both goods and services)?
-
Where do ''emerging markets''
feature within these global production shifts?
How far has this transition gone, and what are
the prospects for the future?
-
How has agricultural production
been restructured and redistributed across the
globe? What dilemmas do these pose for development
and how will they be resolved?
-
Assuming that the competition
for resources is unlikely to moderate in the
near future, what implications does it have
for the processes of accumulation and for socio-economic
conditions?
-
Given the fears generated
by economic and social circumstances and the
needs created by demographic shifts, how would
patterns of international migration change and
evolve?
