Credit Networks and Economic
Development
Graduate students are invited to apply for
the 2003 Summer School to be held at Venice International
University, September 1-6, on the topic "Credit
networks and Economic Development". The Summer
seminar consists of a week-long intensive international
workshop held by internationally renowned experts
and provides a forum for discussion of key issues
and work in progress in financial history.
Aim and Contents
The 2003 Summer Seminar is an intensive course which
is designed to focus on the creation and the development
of networks of credit, the contribution of financial
infrastructures to economic growth and social mobility,
the diffusion and the impact of credit at different
levels of the social ladder. Lecturers will present
case studies from a wide range of historical and geographical
backgrounds discussing episodes of successful development
as well as episodes of poor allocation, misuse and
stagnation.
Structure
Lectures will be held by international scholars. Main
topics will be analysed in greater detail and discussed
in the group. Student participants will have the opportunity
to present and discuss their own research.
Pre-session materials and reading suggestions will
be made available to those enrolled in the program.
All sessions will be conducted in English and proficiency
in spoken and written English is expected.
Two afternoons will be devoted to the discussion of
student’s doctoral thesis projects.
Application and Selection
The Summer Seminar is open to 15 graduate students
with mainly economic and historical background.

Fees
The registration fee is € 350. The fee includes
participation in the course, full accommodation (single
or double room) and meals during weekdays. Travel
expenses have to be covered by the participants. Two
scholarships covering the registration fee of €
350 will be awarded to two outstanding candidates.
Priority will be given to students coming from distant
and/or disadvantaged countries.
The program is organised by the Department of Economics
of the Universita di Venezia "Ca' Foscari",
by the Department of Economics of the Universita di
Trento, by the Faculty of Economics in Forlì
of the University of Bologna and by the faculty of
Economics of the University of Grenoble in cooperation
with Venice International University.
