New Patterns of Development and the New Development "Miracles"
C. P. Chandrasekhar

The paper starts by tracing the development of China and India and gives a brief overview of global manufacturing and service sectors, the respective sources of growth for the two countries. The paper goes on to give a detailed analysis of these growth patterns and the future implications for the two countries. The author analyses the argument that the secret of success of the two countries lies in the fact that they have successfully exploited the benefits of the emerging knowledge based economy. The paper finally concludes with the understanding that there has evolved a new global division of labour that has been epitomised by the development of India and China; however the sustainability of these growth 'miracles' would require the strengthening of certain fundamental structures in both the countries.
