This paper
is a critique of the new labour laws that
have been proposed in Iran in 2006. Even
though popular demands for better working
conditions and reducing unemployment formed
the basis of the coming to power of the
current government in Iran, the labour
law reforms proposed follow a neo-liberal
line of thought. Under the new rules,
hire-and-fire is sought to be introduced
in Iran in the name of improving efficiency
and long term investment, while associations
of workers is strictly state governed
under Islamic laws which means there is
very little scope of political resistance
to exploitation.
